There's no question that hip hop has never been in such a thriving position in pop culture than it is today. From it's inception in the late seventies, the genre has evolved and transformed, blending countless genres and influences into the sound that has dominated the airwaves for the past twenty years. Toronto hip hop duo Just John and Dom Dias have embraced this new wave of hip hop to the fullest, and their latest release, the Don 2 EP, makes a great argument that the duo may just be the emerging leaders of the new school.
Just John is known for pushing the boundaries of music, contrasting styles, blurring genres and presenting innovative ideas and amazing visual aesthetics. The entire movement is bigger than hip hop, it's a full on artistic experience. Just John and Dom Dias describe their music as "manic energy" and this four track EP takes the listener of a bizarre ride of hard hitting bars, intricate wordplay and wavy instrumentals that have endless replay value. Dom Dias has been a staple in the Toronto club scene for years, rocking dancehall, disco, rap and baille funk. This wide array of influences shine though in his production chops and are the perfect complement to Just John's versatile flows. The chemistry between these two artists is undeniable, and is what makes The Don series such an enjoyable body of work.
