Hip Hop heavy weight Illa J returns to the spot light with his latest release, John Yancey. Following up last years R&B influenced project Home, Illa J reunites with LA producer Calvin Valentine for this 12 track project centred around Illa's move to California, romantic relationships and the loss of his brother, J. Dilla. In Classic Illa fashion, the project is filled with soulful instrumentals, boom bap drum breaks and intricate word play. It's safe to say that being the younger brother of a hip hop legend can be vexing when you're coming up; the influence that J. Dilla had on the genre is unparalledded, and casts a big shadow over any producers trying to break though, let alone a blood relative who raps and makes beats. Though heavily inspired by his big bro, Illa J has always deliver bodies of work that stand on their own merit and creativity, and this latest effort is no different. When speaking on the albums title, Illa J stated, “It makes sense that it ended up being called John Yancey because for so long in my career I felt like I was tryna be me and my brother, and I’m finally at peace, like I’m not J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, I’m James’s younger brother John.” Be sure to peep the latest from Illa J and share your thoughts with us.
